The most frequently asked question of me prior to a session is “what do we wear”?
A classic look is to coordinate your family into a single color (typically all white or all black), and this remains popular among many. But, pursuing a classic look does not mean that you have to sacrifice your individual tastes. I would suggest coordinating around light or dark colors that go beyond the simple black and white.
For example, consider shades of gray, or creams with pops of color here or there for fun.
Add accessories! Necklace’s, hair bow’s, belts, shoes, hats can all be used to add bright and fun colors to your portrait!
Bring your own things! A family quilt or something with sentimental value can always be used to add that personal touch and make your photography session truly unique!
And, be sure to include all those members of your family. I love when families include Grandparents, Aunts, Uncle’s, cousin’s and pets in their photos.
Another factor that can help determine dress is determining where you plan to hang your prints. Think about the colors you want in the room you plan on hanging your photos. A family portrait can be a great way to add a pop of color to a room, but you wouldn’t want your portrait to clash with the larger color theme of the room.
It’s also helpful to dress for the season – bright fall colors look amazing with fall leaves in the background.
Have fun with layers! So, your son doesn’t normally wear 3 layers of clothing? Of course not, but with layers you can mix and match colors and find the combination that works best for you and your family.
But, most importantly, be comfortable. If you’re miserable in what you are wearing it will show in the photos. So, try to dress like you normally would, with a touch of personal style and a little color to really make the photos pop.
Here are some examples of my best dressed clients 🙂
I also have a whole pinterest board of what to wear outfits too.
